Busy day for Washington, Highland wrestling

WASHINGTON — The Washington boys’ wrestling team went 3-0 in its home quad on Tuesday night. The Demons scooped up three wins on the night, beating HLV 60-6, Iowa Valley 63-18 and Highland 57-12, a strong way to begin the 2022-23 season.

“Starting 3-0 is obviously what we wanted to do,” said Demon coach Brent Van Weelden. “I don't normally say this, but I think we probably wrestled better than I anticipated.”

Washington was able to roll through a very limited HLV lineup, but Iowa Valley’s full lineup couldn’t stand tall against the Demons either. Washington won every single contested match, including nine pins.

The Demons wrestled Highland at the end of the night, and that meant a marquee showdown between Washington’s Aaron Boone and Highland junior Luke Guseman.

In a rare close match for Boone, he escaped Guseman 1-0, which sparked the Demon win.

“I don't think he had one of those very early last year,” Van Weelden said. That kid is a tough kid, so it's good for Aaron to get a good match there.”

Highland went 1-2 on the day with the only win coming over HLV. Head coach Nick Cole says he’s OK with that, as long as his team improves.

“Not only did I know the result probably wouldn't be in our favor, but I also didn't care that much,” Cole said. “I didn't expect to, and I don't want to, be at our best right now. We want to be our best in February.”

The night also saw six girls’ matches on the day. Washington senior Teegan Sulentich pinned Iowa Valley’s Raelene Hawkins in 1 minute, 22 seconds for the lone Demon win.

Sulentich went 1-1 on the day. Grace Schlak was 0-2. Jenna Bose went 0-2 as well.
