CENTRAL LEE — Cardinal and Van Buren County squared off in the first round of the Class 2A Substate 6 bracket on Saturday night.
Winning the night was Cardinal, who walked away with a 8-2 victory to keep its season alive.
Early on, Van Buren County held the advantage. The Warriors scored one run in the top half of the first inning to take their only lead of the night.
Cardinal matched that run in its half of the first and scored at least a run in the next three innings.
The Comets scored one in the second, five in the third and one more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
VBC couldn’t find the means to get back on top. The Warriors scored once more in the top half of the fifth, but that was the final run of the evening.
For Cardinal, Drake Durflinger went 3-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Kazin Miller went 3-for-4 with one RBI as well.
Brody Phillips and Cayden Courtney each had a hit and two RBIs. Cody Birlson and Craig Miller had one RBI each as well.
Cardinal moves to 14-11 on the season and will take on Interstate 35 (21-8) in round two on Tuesday.
VBC ends its season at 8-17.
