EDDYVILLE — One year after the Cardinal baseball team knocked Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont out of the regional semifinals, the Rockets got their revenge on Tuesday night.
The Comets traveled to future South Central Conference foe EBF for the Class 2A Substate 6 quarterfinals, and they unfortunately went home with an 8-1 loss.
EBF scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Cardinal tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI from eighth-grader Drake Durflinger, but that was all the Comets would get.
EBF scored a run in the bottom of the second to take back the lead and added one more in the third. The real pain wouldn’t come until the fourth, however, when the Rockets sent five runners to the plate to take an 8-1 lead.
Cardinal’s Dawson Lewis would come in to relieve starter Tatum Telfer in the fourth inning and he kept the Rockets scoreless for the rest of the game. The Cardinal offense, however, never got going.
The Comets finished the night with just one hit, a single off the bat of Durflinger. Lewis reached base once on an error, but Cardinal was also shut out in the walks department, drawing zero bases on balls.
Telfer took the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs (two earned) over five hits and three walks, while striking out two batters.
Cardinal ended its season at 13-10 overall. EBF will play Davis County in the substate semifinals on Saturday.
