CHARITON — Tuesday was a tough night for Cardinal Comet basketball. Both the Comet boys and girls squads fell on the road at Chariton, with the boy losing 85-57 and girls 61-24.
The Comets found themselves down just eight after the first quarter in the boys’ battle, 26-18. Chariton never let up offensively. Over the next two quarters, the Chargers outscored the Comets 52-29, 20-10 in the second and 32-15 in the third.
By the end of the third quarter, the Comets trailed 78-43. They would go on to take a fourth 14-7, but it was too little too late.
Cardinal drops to 0-8 with the loss.
On the girls’ side, the No. 15 Chargers played some gritty defense. The Comets got out of single digits just once.
The Chargers blitzed the Comets early, taking the first quarter 19-7 before later giving up just three in the second quarter, while scoring another 19.
At the break, Cardinal found itself down 38-10. The final two frames were a lot close, but Cardinal couldn’t find the means to make the comeback. They were outscored 23-14 in the second half.
Kolbi Saner ended with six points for the Comets. Alexis Bissell had five and Ashlynn Patrick five.
Cardinal moves to 2-7 with the loss.
