WEST BRANCH — The Cardinal offense was stifled by a tough West Branch team in the first round of the Class 1A football playoffs on Friday. West Branch led start to finish in a 35-6 Comet loss.
Cardinal trailed 7-0 after one quarter, 21-0 at halftime and 35-0 after three periods.
The Comets’ last score of the year came on the backs of a pair of seniors. Maddux Jones found Griffin Greiner on a six-yard touchdown pass to cut the West Branch lead to 35-7 after the point after.
Cardinal finished its season at 5-4. The Comets won their first five games of the year before dropping the next four.
West Branch (7-2) moved onto the Class 1A Round of 16. They’ll take on No. 3 Iowa City Regina (9-0) on the road.
