ELDON — A promising start soon evaporated for the Cardinal girls on Monday night. The Comet offense fizzled out in the last three quarters against future South Central Conference opponent Davis County.
The Comets, who will join the Mustangs in the SCC next season, fell 39-20 on their own home floor.
“Davis County is a good athletic team,” said Cardinal girls basketball coach Chris Becker. “We knew it would be a challenge coming in.“
The Comets were able to gain some offensive momentum in the first quarter. Kinsey Hissem scored five points in the opening period and the Comets trailed just 9-7 after the first break.
For the rest of the game, however, Davis County outscored Cardinal 30-13.
“In the first half, our defense was outstanding,” Becker said. “We just didn’t get enough offense, and that was kind of the theme all night.”
The Comets were getting plenty of shot opportunities, but made just eight of their 46 attempts. Davis County led 17-10 at halftime and 32-17 after three quarters.
Hissem ended the night with 11 points and six rebounds to lead the team. Emma Becker scored three points. Cynthia Albert, Ava Ferrell and Brenna Guiter each had two.
It was Cardinal’s final non-conference game against Davis County before moving into the SCC next season. Coach Becker says he could see it being a major game in the near future.
“They are going to probably be a conference rival, being neighboring schools,” Becker said. “Hopefully we can keep getting better, turn it into a rivalry, and hopefully make it a competitive one too.”
