Cardinal one hits Mt. Pleasant
Comets shutout Panthers through six innings of action

MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant and Cardinal softball met on Wednesday night for a non-conference battle, marking the Panthers one break from Southeast Conference play this week.
After all was said and done in the matchup, the Comets walked away winners 12-0.
The Comets had it going on both sides of the ball throughout the game as they notched 17 hits all while holding the Panthers to just one.
Mt. Pleasant continually put the bat to the ball, but the Cardinal defense was nearly flawless.
Cardinal struck first in the opening inning as Emma Becker made her way around the bases after a leadoff double.
Becker later scored on a past ball.
Mt. Pleasant sent four to the plate in the bottom of the frame, putting the ball into play three times, but couldn’t get the runners on base.
The Comets extended their lead in the second as Cythia Albert scored on an RBI single by Ashlynn Patrick, Summer LaRue on a past ball and Patrick later scored on an RBI double from Brinlee Ostrander to push the Cardinal advantage to 4-0.
The Panthers went three up three down in the bottom of the inning and both team went scoreless through the third.
Mt. Pleasant stood strong in the third inning as the Comets got the bases loaded with one out, but Panther pitcher Jolynn Martin caught a line drive and tallied a strikeout to end the inning.
In their time at the plate in the third, the Panthers put just their second runner on base as Emma Starr made it to first on an error in the first.
Meanwhile, Cardinal continued to pull away with a pair in the fourth.
A two RBI single from Nicoa McClure scored Ostander and Kinsey Hissem to make it 6-0.
From then on out, the Comets continued to roll.
They went on to plate another two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to seal it.
For the Comets, seven different players had two hits in the game.
McClure led the way going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Becker, Ostrander, Albert, LaRue and Kennedi Miller all finished with two hits and one RBI.
Ava Ferrell ended with two hits.
Hissem, Ashlynn Patrick and Macy Grove each had one.
Patrick also had a pair of RBIs as well.
McClure took the win in the circle, giving up one hit with three strikeouts.
For Mt. Pleasant, Saige Burchett had the lone hit.
In the circle, Jolynn Martin went five innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and four strikeouts.
Tyi Alter pitched an inning giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits.
With the win, Cardinal improves to 11-12 on the season. Mt. Pleasant drops to 4-19.
