ELDON — Don’t look now but the Cardinal softball team is on a tear heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
The Comets picked up two more wins at their home tournament on Saturday, defeating Chariton 9-5 and Pekin 7-2 in a round robin format. Chariton defeated Pekin 5-2 to take second place.
The Comets have now won seven games in a row and nine of their last 10.
Cardinal battled from an early 1-0 deficit to score the next nine runs against Chariton. Nicoa McClure pitched a complete game, giving up five runs (four earned), and also went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs at the plate.
Ava Ferrell and Alexia McClure each had two RBIs against Chariton. Brinlee Ostrander went 3-for-5.
It was Nicoa McClure again when Cardinal took on rival Pekin, as she and the Comets jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back. The Comet freshman threw four shutout innings in the victory.
Emma Becker had a big game against Pekin, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Kinsey Hissem was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
In their 5-2 loss against Chariton, the Pekin Panthers held a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in the first inning and one in the fourth. Chariton scored four in the fourth and one in the sixth to run away with the game.
