ELDON — Cardinal volleyball kicked off its season on Thursday night with a bout against the Savages of Sigourney.
For the Comets, it wasn’t the start to the season that they would have liked as they were topped 3-0 in the three set series, but there were plenty of bright spots for the squad.
Sigourney took the sets 25-13, 25-22 and 25-13.
The story of the night for the Comets was giving up a large lead out of the gate.
Sigourney took care of business in set one with a commanding 12 point victory, but it was the second frame that Cardinal showed what its made of.
Much like set one, the Savages jumped out to a quick lead, 4-1.
Cardinal didn’t get discouraged.
They answered back with three straight points to knot the set at 4-4.
However, Sigourney kept to its game plan and went on another one of its runs, building up a 14-6 advantage that they would never lose.
After a timeout by head coach Candice Major, the Comets seemed inspired and the ball began to find the floor.
Cardinal slowly chipped away, but Sigourney kept ahead.
Following a big service run by the Comets, the Savages lead was cut to just 19-14.
The next six serves were traded and before long, Sigourney held a 22-16 advantage.
The biggest run of the night for Cardinal followed as it rattled off four straight points to cut it to 22-20.
After a Sigourney timeout, the Comets kept pushing and tallied a kill to make it a one point game.
But it was all for naught, as a miss hit gave back the serve and Sigourney road out the set win to make it 2-0.
In the third and final set of the night, Cardinal hung in during the opening half of the set, but in the end Sigourney cruised to another 25-13 victory.
Cynthia Albert led the Comets with five kills in the match. Emarie Finch followed with four.
Albert also finished with a team-high 23 assists. Finch totaled 19.
Leading in the digs department was Brinlee Ostrander. She finished with 11 on the night.
Albert, Ostrander and Emily Ward all ended with a pair of aces as well.
With the loss, Cardinal opens the season at 0-1.
