CEDAR FALLS - Monday and Tuesday at the Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa's UNI-Dome, area athletes got their first taste of a high school track and field event in almost two years time after last season was washed away by the coronavirus wave.
Cardinal's Griffin Greiner ran the 400 meters in under 52.75 seconds to win fourth place among 84 runners. Fairfield's Kevin Kretz was 29th in the event with a time of 56.24. Kyle Godwin took 19th in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 11 inches.
The Columbus girls ran at the meet on Monday. Emma Milder was the highest placewinner with a long jump of 11 feet, 9 inches for 29th. Teammate Michelle Diaz was 30th in shot put at 30-5 and Libby White's 24-03.75 was 49th. Olivia Carrier was 34th in the long jump at 9-9 and 74th in the 60 meters in 9.47 seconds. Dakota Storm was 67th in the 400 (1:19).
'We took nine guys and only three of them had any high school track experience,” Fairfield head boys coach Brian Dunlap said. 'So it was a great day to get some experience and get some official times and distances.”
The Trojans ran the 3200-meter relay and finished 23rd in 9:25.32.
'Kretz and Kaden Mickels both ran well on the 4x8 and Kyle Godwin had a solid debut in the shot put,” Dunlap said. 'We are looking forward to more time to train and the upcoming outdoor season.”
