The release of the cross-country rankings for Week 5 by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association surprised some fans locally with a Washington Demon mentioned in the Class 3A boys and a Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk not mentioned in the Class 2A girls.
Pekin maintained its position in both the girls and boys Class 1A team ratings.
Washington junior Lance Sobaski was ranked for the first time with a place at No. 27 in 3A.
Mid-Prairie's Danielle Hostetler was dealt a complete drop off the list of 30 runners from last week's spot at No. 1. Hostetler was not ranked in the preseason poll but has been at No. 1 in all of the regular season rankings until being ghosted in Tuesday's release of the individual ratings.
In Wednesday's release of the team rankings, Mid-Prairie's boys dropped from third to fifth, while the girls dropped out of the top spot to No. 2 to make room for Williamsburg.
Danville-New London boys team remained atop the Class 2A list, While the girls entered the top 15 for the first time this season.
The ninth ITFC poll will come out the Thursday before the state meet in Fort Dodge Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31.
Danville-New London's Ty Carr stayed at No. 8 for the third consecutive week and Alexander Julian was at 13 from 14.
For the fourth consecutive week, Columbus is hanging in at the edge of the Top-15 as a team to watch and has moved up to the first listing after being listed second since Week 2.
Addison Parrott of D-NL made quite a move in the pollsters eyes, climbing to second after last week's No. 9 position. Either she bolstered the team or the team bolstered her as D-NL went from a team to watch to the No. 13 position.
Parrot's move to second displaced Mid-Prairie's Jaden Yoder and Sydney Yoder from second and third to third and fourth, respectively. Williamsburg has girls ranked at Nos. 14, 21, 22 and the new No. 1, Ruth Jennings, replaces Hostetler.
Mid-Prairie's Thaddeus Shelter rose from No. 19 to 11 last week, then advanced another spot to No. 10 this week. Jamison Stutzman dropped to 18 after last week's move from 21 to 16 and Chandler Hershberger has gone from 26 to 20 to this week's 18.
Brady Millikin of Pekin fell to No. 7 from 4 in Class 1A last week and stayed at No. 7 this week as the Panthers stayed at No. 5 as a team. Zack Wise had made the 30th spot last week but was not ranked this week.
Pekin's female Panthers are still second as a team, which makes four straight weeks at that spot. Pekin started at No. 4 in preseason, went to No. 3 the first week, then went to No. 2 and are there now. Lauren Steigleder was ranked at No. 30 last week and was up to 24 this week. Lily Fariss rose from No. 22 to last week's 11 and is 13 this week.
