The Iowa High School Athletic Association has named Cedar Rapids as the new site for the Class 3A and 4A state baseball tournaments.
The IAHSAA announced Veterans Memorial Stadium as the new site. The field, which is home to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, was selected through a summer biding process.
The agreement for Veterans Memorial Stadium is only valid for one year. The University of Iowa had previously hosted the Class 3A and 4A state tournaments, for the last three years, after all four state tourneys were moved from Principal Park in Des Moines following the COVID-19 pandemic and changes to the Minor League Baseball schedule.
These will be the first state baseball tournaments to take place in Cedar Rapids in the last 50 years.
The Class 1A and 2A state tournaments will still be held in Carroll at Merchants Park.
Since the tournaments have moved from Principal Park, the Union coverage area has had plenty to watch over in Carroll. New London has made the Class 1A state tournament twice, including three wins in their state championship run in 2022. Mid-Prairie made the Class 2A state tournament in 2022, making the semifinals, and Van Buren County made the tournament in 2023.
This school year’s state tournament is scheduled for July 22-26, 2024.
