Champions galore from tourneys

New London head coach Mark Chiri has said that rankings are for grandma's refrigerator, but they are great for wrestling because they get people talking about the sport. People should be talking about some great matches at the Fort Madison tournament Saturday.
The premiere bout may have been between Union area wrestlers Lane Scorpil of Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union and Bryce Thompson of Highland at 113 pounds. Thompson is ranked eighth in Class 1A at the weight and Scorpil is fifth in Class 2A.
The two met in the championship match and Thompson, who now has a 6-1 record, won an 8-6 decision over Scorpil (9-1).
There were a number of other champions Saturday including Mt. Pleasant's Carson Coleman, Mid-Prairie's Josh Wallington, Pekin's Mason Juhl and Cael Baker, New London's Marcel Lopez and Dominic Lopez.
5 area teams at Fort Madison
FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Invitational was pared down to a one-day event this year.
New London had two titlists. Marcel Lopez (19-0) registered two pins and two technical falls to win at 120. Dominic Lopez (18-1) won the 145 title with two pins and a decision. Second places were won by Josh Glendening (13-2), who at 152 was edged 2-1 in the title contest and Currey Jacobs (16-2), who was injured in his title bout at 195. Boden Pickle (13-6 at 170) was fourth. Mavy Pope (12-8 at 106) finished seventh as did Brody Butterbaugh (9-4 at 285) and Carter Allen (8-10 at 220) was eighth.
At 182, Jacob Hill was Washington's best place winner, taking fifth with two pins and a loss. At 138, Jacob Miller was seventh with a pin, a bye and was pined twice. At 160, Chase Greiner recorded two pins and was pinned thrice to place eighth. Curtis Stender was eighth.
Chance Malone (8-1) got a pin in his third-place match at 285 for C/WMU. Teammate Ty Scorpil (5-4 at 106) was fourth. Will Hotzz (8-3 at 170) placed fifth. Trent Wilkerson (5-5 at 182) was seventh.
Highland's other placewinners were: at 106, Easton Schlabaugh (5-2) was fifth; Carlos Valenzuela (4-1) was fifth at 126; Jack Peiffer (3-6) was eighth at 120.
Van Buren's place winners were Brant Tedrow (5-3 at 220) in fourth, Tyler Stoltz (6-4 at 138) in fifth, and three - T.J. Jirak (2-8 at 126), Maddix Kite (2-3 at 132), Josiah Westercamp (4-6 at 285) --- placed eighth.

Wallington is champ
DEWITT - West Delaware won the 13-team Saber Invitational meet with 255 points. Mid-Prairie tied Midland for seventh with 92 points.
Josh Wallington won the 220 pound division to improve to 17-1. He recorded two pins, both in less than a minute and a half, and won the title with a 11-2 major decision.
At 285, Gannon Callahan (11-3) won the third-place match with an 11-3 decision. Cael Garvey (11-3) went 1-1 with a forfeit to place third at 195. At 113, Mose Yoder (16-4) was pinned, but won his next two to place fifth.
Ben Meader (17-5) was sixth at 182. He was 3-2, all pins.
Coleman, Juhl, Baker take titles
IOWA CITY - At the Regina Invitational, Pekin's 124 points edged Sigourney-Keota by a point for second, Mt. Pleasant was seventh with 80.5 and Fairfield was ninth at 78. MFL MAR Mac won with 246.5.
Winning the 126-pound title was Mt. Pleasant's Carson Coleman (9-1). He won by 19-5 major decision over Brecken Courtright of Fairfield (3-3), won by tech fall (4:17 (16-0)) over Daniel Mc Laughlin of Sigourney-Keota (13-12), then took another major (14-2) in the championship match.
Pekin's Cael Baker (13-2) won two decisions to win the 152 class.
Mason Juhl (15-2) took the 182 title with a pin of Aidan Schuster of Sigourney-Keota (17-6) in: 58. Shuster had two pins to get to the title match.
Other Sigourney-Keota finishers were: at 195, Cade Streigle (15-6) was second with a pin and a lost 7-4 decision. Jack Clarahan (20-3) was third at 160 as was Cade Molyneux (8-2) at 170. Reid Molyneux (6-4) and Daniel Mc Laughlin (13-12) each placed fourth. Evan Dawson (13-10) placed fifth at 152. DJ Hammes (12-13) earned a sudden victory in the fifth-place match at 120.
Mt. Pleasant saw Gannon McNamee (7-4) take second with two decisions, then lost a decision in the 120 title match. Sam Carrasco (6-3) got pinned in his opener but then won the next three by fall to take third at 220. Bowen Davis (6-6) lost a decision, won by injury then recorded two pins, one over Pekin's Gavyn Brown in 1:32, for third at 132. Ben Carthey (1-3) at 126 and Dylan Cowick (1-3) at 182 each placed sixth.
Fairfield's Payton Cline (4-2) won by major decision, won in sudden victory and lost two decisions to finish fourth at 152. Cohyn Roach (4-2) took fourth at 145, going 2-2. Theodore Metcalf (3-2) at 195 was fourth. Cesar Smithburg (4-2) placed took fourth at heavyweight. Logan Adam (3-3) won a tiebreaker in the fifth-place match at 160. Courtright (3-3) finished in fifth at 126. Kenneth Craig (1-2) was fifth at 285. Arya Patel (1-4) finished sixth at 220.
Pekin's Bailey Frescoln (8-2) took second with two pins and lost a 5-2 decision for the title at 145. Blake Juhl (14-7) was second with two pins, then lost by fall in the title match. Ryan Doud (6-9) placed fifth at 195. Joseph Lamansky (3-3) was sixth. Michael Jones (17-5) was sixth.
