Chiri inducted into Hall of Fame
DES MOINES — New London’s Mark Chiri was officially inducted into the Iowa high school wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday at the 2024 state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.
After getting the call earlier this winter, Chiri was finally able to walk to center mat and get his plaque just before the grand finals. He immediately handed the plaque to nine-year grandson Lou Chiri, who Mark says is in his first year of youth wrestling.
Chiri was honored after 37 years of coaching at New London. During that time, he coached 56 total place-winners, including 10 state championships. He also coached the Tigers to a second-place team title in 2008, one of seven Top-10 finishes in his reign.
