CJ Speedway crowns season champions
Aug. 15, 2021 10:47 am
COLUMBUS JUNCTION — Friday night saw the running of the IMCA Season Championships in five classes with an entertaining race program featuring wild races, close finishes and a rollover accident.
After slingshot moves, oil fires, caution flags and uncountable lead changes, Jarrett Brown, Adam Bell, Logan Anderson, Christian Grady and Daniel Wauters claimed season titles in their respective classes at CJ Speedway.
The Stewart & Sons Fuel IMCA Modified division featured plenty of wild action. The track was conducive to slide jobs and throw-the-car-as-hard-as-you-can moves in the main event. Mark Burgtorf led the race for the first 12 laps before Denny Eckrich was able to take advantage of the bank in turns one and two and use the berm at the top of the track to set his car up for a slingshot move that boosted him into the lead for good as he went on to score the win. Burgtorf ran second ahead of Jarrett Brown, who was crowned track champion in the class.
Jason Cook did not want to see a caution late in the Mincer Ford IMCA Stock Car main event but fortunately a second shot at the restart allowed Cook to maintain the lead and hold on for the win. Cook was able to stymie Adam Bell, who used his second-place finish to score his second consecutive track Championship in the very tough Mincer Ford Stock Car Class. Cook took the lead early from Matt Picray and held off all challengers in scoring the 20-lap Season Championship feature.
Colton Livezey scored the win in the Houston Brothers Trucking IMCA Sportmod main event. The victory coupled with Logan Anderson’s finish in second made the difference in the final tally for the season title with Anderson accumulating enough points to capture the season-long championship. Livezey ran the high side and used the dike to turn the car in turns one and two on his way to a thrilling win. Early leader Nick Aupperle followed Anderson across the line in third.
The Midwest Towing IMCA Sport Compacts provided the wildest race of the night with multiple accidents. An exploded oil line resulted in a ball of fire under Jason Staley's car which caused a lengthy delay. When the checkered flag flew, it was Chuck Fullenkamp making his way to victory lane. The 48 car of Fullenkamp took the win ahead of early leader Caleb Giese. Christian Grady crossed the finish line in fourth and earned the track points championship.
Rookie driver Luke Phillips picked the last night of the year to win his first feature in the CJ Auto Parts/NAPA Stores Hobby Stock division. Phillips advanced from the third row to score the win ahead of Jared Miller. Daniel Wauters drove his car with extensive damage from a crash in the heat race to a fourth-place finish in garnering the track championship.
The stage is now set for the rescheduled race featuring the late models of the “Haulin With Hoker” East Series of the Super Late Model Racing Association.
The Late Models will invade the Louisa County Fairgrounds Thursday. Late Model Drivers from all across the region will battle it out for a $3,000 winners share of the large purse.
The special Thursday night event also will see Modifieds, Stock Cars and Sportmods in action along with the Super Late Models. The grandstands will open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps taking to the track at 6:45 p.m.
