Class 1A: alive for title

In two different Class 1A districts Saturday, 13 Union area wrestlers advanced to the state tournament that starts Thursday in Des Moines.

State qualifiers from the Class 1A District 8 tournament at Wapello were WACO's Landan Provino and Highland's Easton Schlabaugh and Bryce Thompson, who was the champion at 113.

Sigourney-Keota and New London each brought six wrestlers to compete in the District 5 meet in Pleasantville.

New London qualified five Tigers to the state tournament with four - Marcel Lopez (who is ranked No. 1 by the Predicament), No. 2 Dominic Lopez, No. 8 Josh Glendening, No. 8 Currey Jacobs - as district champions. Boden Pickle placed second to advance to state.

Of Sigourney-Keota's two qualifiers, Cade Molyneux, who has a 23-11 record, was the champion at 170 pounds by opening with a 13-3 decision, then clipping Pickle (43-14), 7-4. Cobra Cade Striegle (34-13) won his opener in 3 minutes, 52 seconds, but Jacobs (36-3) won the 195 title by pinfall in 3:32.

Pekin advanced two of three Panthers at the district meet. Cael Baker (31-9 at 152) and No. 8 Mason Juhl (40-3 at 182) both placed second.

Of four Van Buren County wrestlers, Brant Tedrow (29-7) made it through at 285 by recording a pin in 5:35 but lost first place in 4:47.

At Wapello, No. 5 Thompson (32-3) won by fall in 1:40, then recorded a major decision of 17-3. Provino, who has a 5-6 record, won his first match at 285 with a pin then lost by pinfall, finishing second. Schlabaugh (39-6 at 106) opened with a pin in a mere 23 seconds to advance against Wilton's Brody Brisker (45-4), who advanced with a 34-second pin. Brisker then won in 1:39.

At Pleasantville, Marcel Lopez (56-0 at 120) was a point-making machine, winning with two technical falls: 23-8 in 3:58 and 26-9 in 4:48. Dominic Lopez (55-2 at 145) followed the example of his brother with two tech falls: 20-5 in 5:48 and 25-10 in 4:15. Glendenning (50-6 at 152) registered two pins in a total of 3:38.

Teo ranked wrestlers had tough days. Jack Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota, ranked eighth, missed qualifying despite wrestling for the title at 160. He opened with a 7-2 decision, then his title match with sixth-ranked Cael Cassady of Martensdale-St Marys went to overtime and Clarahan lost in sudden victory, 7-5. He then had to participate in a wrestle back against seventh-ranked Connor Golston of Moravia and was pinned in 1:39.

Juhl was upset by a 3-1 score in his opening match by a freshman who won the division, Brody Sampson of Collins-Maxwell. Juhl stayed alive with a pin in 1:26 and advanced to state with the result of the wrestleback.

'Sampson blocked Mason's setups, had a very similar body style, so it was a good hard-fought match,” Pekin coach Al Chapman said. In the wrestleback, 'Mason was leading 10-3 when bit in his forearm while receiving a crossface. After the referees conferred, it was determined as teeth marks in the forearm which is ruled as unsportsmanlike and the match is ended by disqualification.”
