The Class 1A boys basketball tournament is set after a packed Saturday night of substate final action.
Here we will take a look at those substate final games and see how the eight teams earned a ticket to the 2024 state tournament.
First off, it’s Winfield-Mt. Union (20-2) in the 1A substate 5 bracket. The No. 5 ranked Wolves cruised through the opening two rounds before completing a historic comeback against Notre Dame for the district title.
That set the Wolves up with a matchup against fellow Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe Holy Trinity Catholic with a state trip on the line.
The Wolves were able to hold on for the 46-41 win despite a late surge by the Cursaders that pulled them within a bucket.
In substate one, top seeded North Union (22-3) get into the tournament. After going down to the wire, 54-51, with St. Edmond in the district final the Warriors won an overtime thriller with South O’Brien 58-51.
Substate two’s champion was the Bulldogs of Lake Mills (24-1). The No. 4 ranked Bulldogs downed Remsen St. Mary’s in a tightly contested contest, 41-38. Lake Mills saw an eight-point lead evaporate in the fourth, but were able to hang on for the win.
No. 1 overall North Linn (22-1) is back in the state tournament yet again. The Lynx dominated the competition, with their closest game being substate final. They were victorious in that one, 74-59, over West Fork.
The No. 3 team in the class will be featured in Des Moines. Marquette Catholic (25-1) closest game up to the substate final was 31 points. Marquette Catholic then handled Dunkerton in the final 57-42.
Substate six saw Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-5) come out on top. The Rebels might have had one of the best runs through the district rounds. They upset No. 6 Keota in the district final 67-62 and then followed with another upset over No. 10 Kee 52-49 for a trip to state.
No. 7 Lynnville-Sully (24-1) is in. The Hawks dominated Bedford in the second half on their way to a 64-50 win and a state tournament birth.
Finally, in substate eight No. 2 Madrid was downed by Woodbine (23-2).
The state matchups are as follows:
No. 1 North Linn vs. No. 8 Woodbine
No. 4 Winfield-Mt. Union vs. No. 5 Lynnville-Sully
No. 2 Marquette Catholic vs. No. 7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck
