Cardinal, Van Buren County earn 2023 distinctions

With the completion of the 2023 softball season, the Iowa Girls Coaches Association has rolled out its 2023 Class 2A All-District softball teams.
The Union area finished the season with two area athletes named to the lists.
Cardinal’s Nicoa McClure and Van Buren County’s Annabelle Cormier both earned the 2A Southeast All-District distinction.
Cormier, a senior, helped the Warriors to a second-place finish in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North with a 19-8 overall record and a 10-3 record in conference play.
Cormier hit .449 this season with 34 runs, 35 hits and 22 RBIs. She was also stellar at first-base, finishing with a fielding percentage of .995 with just one error.
McClure led the Comets to a 14-16 overall record and a 3-11 in the South Central Conference. A conference that saw two teams make the state tournament.
The Comets missed state by two games, falling in the substate semifinals to eventual state champion Regina Catholic, 3-2.
McClure pitched to a 12-15 record on the season.
She gave up 121 runs (73 earned) on 216 hits against 778 opponents. With an earned runs average of 2.75, she struck out 152.
McClure batted .245 on the year, tallying 24 hits and a team leading 17 RBIs.
