There was a barrage of shots fired at the Washington High School soccer field on Monday afternoon, but unfortunately, the majority of the shots came from the visitors.
The Washington girls? soccer team faced 34 shots on goal while hosting Clear Creek Amana, the No. 4 team in Class 1A, and although the Demons withstood for much of the first half, they couldn?t get their own offense going until it was too late, falling 11-1, dropping the Demons to 0-2 on the season.
?The score looks ugly, but in the first half we played awesome,? Washington head coach Kyle Collins said. ?We could have done some things better and we tried to work on those things in the second half. You do what you can against a team that is that good, and I thought we played great.?
Washington senior Stephanie Evans made 23 saves on the game, and Collins was impressed with her ability on a number of them.
?She had an excellent game, really,? Collins said. ?A lot of shots on goal today and she saved a ton. In the first half they only scored three goals and there probably could have been 10 more, but she played tough and if the defense got beat, she?d step right out there. She kept them motivated and she?s a key person back there.?
Despite Clear Creek Amana dominating the offensive touches nearly all game, the Demons held the Clippers to three goals in the first half, the third coming right as the last seconds ticked away on the clock.
In the second half, the Clippers went with the wind and found the back of the net early and often as Clear Creek senior Megan Hall and sophomore Hannah Bormann both recorded a hat trick in the game.
Washington picked up a late goal in the second half off a missed shot by Kristen Barber. Clippers goalie Sarah Johnson wasn?t able to reel in the rebound and it went straight to the waiting foot of Washington senior Lauren Swan, who picked up her first goal of the season.
The Demons will have a quick turnaround, as they look to take on Mid-Prairie on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Wellman, and Collins said the team will need to be mentally tough for the match-up.
?We are going to take what we saw today, and work on them for (Tuesday),? Collins said. ?Sometimes you have three games in a week, and you?ll have an ugly score and that might get you down for a second, but you have to be ready to go the next day. Tomorrow they?ll bring it really hard.?
