WINFIELD - With the score tied 61-61 and time ticking down in the boys game on Tuesday night, the ball found Husky senior Cole Adamson. Adamson raised up and knocked down a game-winning three at the buzzer, giving Highland a 64-61 win.
'It's a once in a lifetime feeling for me right now,” Adamson said. 'It feels good.”
The game-winner capped off a comeback win for the Highland boys, which earned the Huskies a split. W-MU controlled the girls game, taking it 43-25.
Adamson's game-winner was the fourth three-pointer in the final two minutes. Zack Lasek hit a game-tying three-pointer with two minutes left. Christian Gerot gave W-MU a 61-58 lead with 1:20 remaining, and Mason McFarland tied it up on the next possession. After a miss on W-MU's end and a timeout with 8.7 seconds left, a hustle play by another senior, Derrick Sandburg, led to the game-winner.
'The play was originally set up for Mason McFarland,” Adamson said. 'He had a pretty good look, and usually knocks it down. Fortunately we got the board. Derrick Sandberg found me open. Great teammate. He threw it to me, and I didn't really think much, just hoping it went in, and it did.”
W-MU led the boys game 17-13 after one quarter, 29-27 at halftime and 47-44 after three quarters.
'The kid just made a great shot in that situation,” W-MU head coach Klay Edwards said. 'Tip your cap to him.”
Adamson haunted the Wolves all game long. He led the Huskies with 23 points. Lasek finished with 17, and McFarland had 15 to give Highland three double-digit scorers. Sandburg finished with four points. Bryce Waters had five, and Bill Laughlin had 13.
Gerot had a huge game of his own, leading all scorers with 24. Daunte Oepping had 16. Jared Arnold scored 15. Ty Yocum had four, and Juanito Piper finished with two.
W-MU shot out to an early lead in the girls game, thanks in part to a seven-point first quarter by Kyndal Townsley.
'That was key, That's one of those goals, to get some early separation,” W-MU girls coach Mitch Wachs said. 'But I thought Highland scrapped really well. They struggle to score, but they scrapped, and I knew they'd keep fighting.”
The Wolves led 14-5 after one quarter, 25-13 at halftime and 32-21 after three periods, en route to the 43-25 win.
Townsley scored 14 to lead the Wolves. Farrah Nelson had 10. Bradie Buffington, Jami Wilkerson and Jobey Malone had five points each, and the duo of Keetyn Townsley and Melina Oepping had two apiece.
Highland's girls were led by Kayla Cerny, who scored seven points. Abbi Stransky, Jenna Sands and Alyssa Clarke each had four. Emma Soukup, Haley Sweeting and Mackinze Hora finished with two each.
