Sigourney Keota had no trouble in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs. The Cobras left no room for an Interstate 35 comeback, as they scored 31 points in the second half of a 45-0 victory.
The Cobras held the Roadrunners to just 80 yards of offense and turned them over three times in the win. Senior Owen Menke forced and recovered a fumble. Sophomores Landon Fisch and Blake Baker each had an interception. The takeaways helped Sigourney Keota achieve its fourth shutout win of the season.
Baker carried the load on offense for Sigourney Keota with outstanding performance. He rushed 13 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Baker also had 3.5 tackles and a sack on defense along with 77 return yards.
Junior Carson O'Rourke chipped in two of Sigourney Keota’s five touchdowns Friday. O'Rourke finished with 25 yards and the two scores on just five carries. He secured the game’s final touchdown with a 10-yard run in the fourth, and had a 6-yard run to make it 14-0 in the second.
Quarterback Brayden Wood only attempted three passes as the Cobras kept their attack primarily on the ground. One of Wood’s two completions was a 12-yard touchdown strike to senior John Berg that put Sigourney Keota up 24-0 midway through the third quarter.
Junior Landon Conrad also found the end zone on the ground for Sigourney Keota. He extended the Cobras lead to 38-0 with a six-yard score early in the fourth and finished second on the team in rushing with 60 yards on 14 carries.
The win earned the Cobras a 1A second round matchup against Beckman Catholic in the second round of the 1A playoffs. The Trailblazers went 7-1 in the regular season and beat Jesup 63-13 in the first round of the postseason.
Kickoff between Sigourney Keota and Beckman Catholic is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Beckman Catholic High School.
