ELDON - All those explosions one might hear Friday night may be coming from the offensive fireworks that likely will occur when No. 3 Sigourney-Keota and its Cobras visit the Comets of Cardinal for a Class 1A District 6 football battle.
The Cobras average 41 points a game, the Comets 38. Cardinal set a school record for points in the first game this season with a 62-26 win over Columbus, then obliterated that mark with 74 last week against Van Buren County.
Cardinal junior Griffin Greiner leads 1A in receiving touchdowns with nine and yards with 520. Maddux Jones is third in passing touchdowns with 12. Landon Becker has the fourth longest TD reception at 80 yards and is tied for second in fumble recoveries with three. Ian Liles has the second most 2-point conversions.
Impressive, but the Cobras have Brady Duwa, First in kickoff returns for a score, second in longest, first in punt return TDs and yards, second in average, fourth in longest are just some of Duwa's stats.
Another special teams advantage is the Cobras Colton Clarahan who is second in kickoff yardage, fifth in point after touchdowns with 23 and has kicked the third-longest field goal.
The Cobras are first in yards per rush (8.1), fourth as a team in rushing TDs, second in TDs overall, third in all-purpose yards.
The Comets are second as a team in both passing and receiving TDs, third in passing yards, fifth in fumble recoveries.
The Cobras actually rank in two passing stats. They are fifth at 19.7 yards per pass completion and first in quarterback rating at 186.5. Cardinal is at second with 178.6. The QB ratings is quite a feat since both teams have used a pair of QBs. Cade Molyneux and Clarahan are 26-of-37 for 512 yards and nine scores with a single interception. Jones and Blaine Bryant are 74-of-105 with 18 TDs and two interceptions.
The rushing is a decided advantage with Sam Sieren's 754 leading four other Cobras with at least 100 yards. Cardinal has four backs with over 100 yards, but the leader is Liles at 190.
All the stats can be compared but don't make for a game. The stats are earned on the field of play and Friday will showcase a number of awesome plays from both teams.
The Cobras basically locked up the district title with last week's 31-14 win over Mediapolis. Mediapolis defeated Cardinal 44-8 two weeks ago.
Griffin Greiner throws a stiff arm during Cardinal's season-opening win over Columbus. The Comets will have their hands full this week as undefeated Sigourney-Keota comes to town. (File)
