SIGOURNEY - Sigourney-Keota blasted another football opponent Friday, this time Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 53-14. The weird thing is the Cobras didn't even match their season average for points of 54.5, which leads Class 1A.
The Cobras lead the state, 8-Player included, in rushing with 1,943 yards. That's an average of 486 a game.
The best part of Friday win was the way SK weathered the storm in the first half and didn't panic. The first play was a long EBF TD pass, but SK followed that with a TD drive of its own, yet trailed at the end of the first quarter 7-6. The Cobras had responded with a 21-7 second-quarter run with the fourth score a last-second TD, making it 26-14 at intermission.
'We made some offensive halftime adjustments in our blocking scheme and made a few defensive adjustments, which lead to a second-half shutout on defense and 27 more points on the board on offense,” SK coach Jared Jensen said. 'It was the second straight week we took our opponents' best shot in the first half and then were able to take over the second half.
The Cobras' JD Stout ran for 204 yards and three TDs and Sam Sieren added 178 yards and two TDs. The X Factor is Brady Duwa, who averaged 28.3 yards per carry on three touches and is averaging 17.1 yards per carry on 15 carries this season.
'It is great to have two guys that you know can make big plays and touch the ball a ton, but when you have a third guy that has explosive plays every time he touches the ball, that is a huge deal,” jensen said. 'Not only has Brady played a huge role on offense, he has been outstanding on defense.”
Duwa had two interceptions Friday, giving him a total of six interceptions on the season thus far. Wyatt Sieren had seven tackles and Cade Molyneuz five.
'I think our offensive and defensive lines deserve a lot of credit for our backs being able to rush for so many yards and being disruptive up front on defense, causing eight fumble recoveries and 11 interceptions on the season,” Jensen said. 'What these guys do up front give the guys behind them the opportunity to make some great plays.”
When things were not easy in the first half, SK kept finding ways to make things work when things were not going the Cobra way.
'We showed resilience and leadership to get us through the first half, which was probably our least productive half of the season,” Jensen said. 'The only thing I can say where things stuck out as big mistakes were the two touchdown passes we gave up. We have to find a way to limit the big plays for touchdowns and make teams drive the ball on us.”
SK starts district play Friday when Wilton comes to Sigourney.
