SIGOURNEY - The Sigourney-Keota football team had one of its best starts to a game and best performances of the season Friday before lightning ended the game with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter and the Cobras ahead of Wilton 40-6.
SK got a sack fumble forced by Cade Molyneux and recovered by Payton Schauf on the fifth play of Wilton's first series. On SK's first offensive play, JD Stout scampered into the end zone from 55 yards out.
'I think that was the beginning of the end. Our kids gained absolute confidence from that point forward,” SK head coach Jared Jensen said. 'Last year's 35-0 loss to Wilton resonated in a lot of players' and coaches' minds prior to kickoff.”
The teams traded punches in the first quarter before SK scored another Stout TD to finish the quarter up 14-0. Wilton came back and scored on a 70-yard TD pass early in the second quarter. Two more rushing TDs by Stout opened things up for SK. He finished with 243 yards on 15 carries.
Brady Duwa and the Cobra defense forced a pick six with 31 seconds left in the half, which gave SK a 34-6 lead heading into halftime.
'We had planned to pound the ball like we have the previous four games and continue to create turnovers on defense,” Jensen said.
SK had an eight-play drive before being forced to punt, but then senior defensive end Dawson Baumert picked up another sack fumble forced by Molyneux and scampered for 30 yards for TD.
'I think the guys deserve a lot of praise for how they played, and I can't say enough about every single Cobra player that was out on the field playing the best team football we have played all season long,” Jensen said. 'Our offensive and defensive lines deserve a ton of credit for what we are able to accomplish this season on both sides of the ball. Our ‘skill' guys are in great position on both sides of the ball due to the physicality of our line play.”
SK is 5-0, 1-0 and plays at Van Buren Friday.
