SIGOURNEY — It was an off night for the Sigourney-Keota offense on Friday night when the sixth-ranked Cobra football team welcomed in No. 7 Dike-New Hartford in the Class 1A Round of 16.
After scoring 50 or more points in each of the last three games, a slow start for the Cobra offense led to a 28-18 defeat.
The Cobra defense played well in the first quarter. Dike-New Hartford scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but that’s all Sigourney-Keota would give up.
After trailing 7-0 at the end of the opening period, the Cobras gave up one more touchdown in the second quarter. Sigourney-Keota did put three points on the board when Caden Clarahan knocked in a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter.
The Cobras trailed 14-3 at halftime, and D-NH threw a big punch early in the third quarter when running back Noah Borchdering busted out an 83-yard touchdown run. That brought the Wolverines’ advantage to 21-3.
Sigourney-Keota’s first touchdown came with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter. Sawyer Stout found Kale Clarahan on a seven-yard touchdown pass, and it was back to a two score game, at 21-10.
Dike-New Hartford would throw another haymaker on the ensuing kick off. It was once again Borcherding who burned the Cobras, taking the kick 80 yards to the house. That pushed the lead back to 28-10 just before the fourth quarter.
Sigourney-Keota would score one more time when Stout hit Brody Greiner on a five-yard touchdown pass. The extra point cut the lead back to 28-18, but the Cobras would run out of time.
Stout completed eight passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Kindred had a big night catching the football, hauling in six passes for 136 yards.
Kale Clarahan led the Cobras with 54 yards rushing. Kindred ran for 42 yards.
Defensively, Brady Clark and Evan Vittetoe each had five tackles. The Sigourney-Keota didn’t have any takeaways.
Dike-New Hartford picked off two passes on the day. One of those interceptions was off Stout, and one came at the hands of Isaac Bruns on a halfback pass.
Dike-New Hartford moved on to play at No. 1 Grundy Center this Friday in the Class 1A quarterfinals.
Sigourney-Keota ended its season 8-2.
