VAN METER — Van Meter showed why they’re the No. 1 team in Class 1A Friday night against Sigourney-Keota in the two’s Class 1A quarterfinal matchup.
The loss marks the end of the season for the outstanding Cobra, as Van Meter cruised to a 45-0 victory.
It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to click on both sides of the ball.
After a three and out by the Cobras to start the game, the Bulldogs took the punt return to the house to open up the scoring.
One defensive stop and an offensive drive later, Van Meter made it 14-0 on a Ben Gordon four yard punch in.
Gordon had himself a night on the ground, finishing with 168 yards and four touchdowns.
Van Meter found the end zone once more in the first quarter to make it 21-0 and they didn’t let up in the second quarter.
Sawyer Stout and the Sigourney-Keota run game struggled to get through the tough Van Meter defense, as they didn’t get a first down until midway through the second quarter.
Couple the offensive struggles with the Bulldogs hammering away offensively and it didn’t bode well for the Cobras.
Gordon scored his second of the night on a nine-yard touchdown to make it 28-0. He would find pay dirt again with 1:01 to go in the first half to make it 35-0.
To start the second, Gordon put the finishing touches on his night with a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.
The Bulldog’s Ben Gilliland threw just four times in the win, completing three passing for one touchdown to Aydn Netten.
Van Meter advances to the Class 1A semifinals.
Sigourney-Keota ends its season at 8-3. The Cobras had been one of the hottest teams in the Union area all season long.
After losing their first two games of the season, they went on to win eight straight up until the meeting with Van Meter.
