SIGOURNEY — On 4th-and-goal from inside the 5-yard line, the Sigourney-Keota defense needed to make just one more stop in Friday night’s Class 1A Round of 16 matchup.
The Cobras led Mediapolis 20-14 in overtime- with one snap left. The Bulldogs gave the ball to star running back Anthony Isley, and he was met with a wave of Cobra defenders, who brought him down and delivered a huge six-point win to the Sigourney-Keota fans.
The stop completed a shut out of Mediapolis’ offense in the second half in overtime. The game was 14-14 at the half, and the two defenses played stellar in the second half.
The Cobras got the ball first in overtime, and Cole Clarahan found the end zone to give them their first lead of the game. It was his second rushing touchdown of the game.
The only other Sigourney-Keota score was a 70-yard bomb down the right sideline from Sawyer Stout to Clay Morse.
Stout completed three passes for 112 yards and a score. Clarahan only ran for 24 yards on the day, but did find the end zone twice.
Jack Clarahan led the Cobra defense with 15 tackles. Reid Molyneux had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Cole Kindred forced one fumble, and Cole Clarahan had one interception.
The Cobras won despite allowing 302 rushing yards, including 172 from Isley.
The win was Sigourney-Keota’s eighth in a row. The Cobras are now one game from a return trip to the UNI-Dome for the first time since 2020. They would need to upset No. 1 Van Meter (9-1) next Friday to earn their spot.
