SIGOURNEY - New London head coach Mark Chiri has said rankings are for grandma's refrigerator and there was a good example of that Saturday in the Class 1A Sectional 10 wrestling meet.
New London is ranked No. 7 as a team in the latest release of The Predicament, but the Tigers finished second to unranked Sigourney-Keota. An individual ranked seventh, Connor Golston (31-7) lost to eighth-ranked Jack Clarahan of SK on an 8-5 decision.
Individual winners and runners-up advance to Saturday's district meet in Pleasantville.
Team winners and runner-up wrestle Tuesday in regional dual meets. By winning, Sigourney-Keota ends up with a possible match against the top-ranked team and New London possibly meets No. 2. The Cobras will see Dyersville Beckman in Gilbertville with the winner meeting No. 1 Don Bosco. Chiri takes the New London team to Lisbon to face Alburnett then Lisbon takes on the winner.
