COLUMBUS JUNCTION -- This Class 1A District 5 game had to deal with some lightning strikes that delayed kickoff.
'The kids stayed focused and came out ready to play,” SK coach Jared Jensen said. 'We had some serious rain the first half, but kept the ball on the ground and pounded out yards effectively in the mud. We had some mishaps on snaps and exchanges, but expected some of that with the weather. We were able to make up for the mistakes we made.”
SK has a 20-0 lead when Chance Colby ran 26 yards for a touchdown to get Columbus within 20-6 with 5 minutes, 2 seconds left in the first half. The Wildcats wouldn't score again until Jose Cerezo scored with 3:32 left in the game.
'The weather was a factor for us, as we has difficulty throwing the ball,” Columbus coach Scott Symmonds said. 'Cerezo and Colby had solid games on both sides of the ball. We sat Colby in the second half when he hurt his ankle.
Will Schwab had a great defensive game. Sigourney brought their rushing attack and we had trouble stopping it.”
Schwab had 14 tackles for the Wildcats.
'Sam Sieren had a heck of a game on the ground for us,” Jensen said. Sieren ran 18 times for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
'JD Stout had another big game on the ground as well,” Jensen said. Stout ran 21 times for 190 yards and two TDs.
Dylan Sereg and Brady Duwa scored a TD each for SK.
'Trent Hendricks played a great game again on defense at linebacker,” Jensen said. Hendricks made seven stops for the Cobras.
Columbus is 0-7, 0-3 and plays at Wilton Friday.
SK is 5-2, 2-1 and hosts Wapello Friday.
WACO 50, Winfield-Mount Union 6
WAYLAND -- After this 8-man District 4 game experienced an hour delay because of lightning, the Warriors got out to a fast start by scoring twice on their first three plays from scrimmage to go up 16-0.
'Defensively, we played well, giving up only one scoring drive and containing them,” WACO coach Chad Edeker said. 'There were a few times a wet ball caused trouble, but not a major issue.”
The visitors scored their only TD late in the first quarter. W-MU had just 94 yards of total offense.
'Colton Horak and the offensive line stood out,” Edeker said. Horak had 206 yards rushing and four TDs on 19 carries. 'The O-line did a good job opening up holes for him. Our D-line did a nice job of getting penetration and getting numerous tackles for loss.”
Horak had two tackles for loss and 9.5 total. Braden Hammons had 8.5 tackles, a sack and two TFL.
WACO is 5-3, 4-3 and has a bye this Friday. W-MU is 1-7, 1-6.

RIVERSIDE -- The Huskies lost their Homecoming game in the Class A District 6 game.
'The weather affected both teams, but with their size, it was a little tougher to move them off the line of scrimmage,” Highland coach Scott Morel said. 'When we were trying to cut against the grain, if we didn't have our feet underneath us, we slipped. Homecoming was not a factor in the game. It was tough sledding for everyone.”
Trey Lasek completed 5 of 9 passes for 47 yards and ran 15 times for 75 yards.
Brady Hahn was in on 15 tackles for Highland. Cole Adamson had six solo stops and seven assists. He also was in on two tackles for loss.
Highland is 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the district. The Huskies travel to Eldon to play Cardinal Friday.
