SIGOURNEY — Two years ago, the Sigourney-Keota football team saw its playoff run come to an end at Dike-New Hartford. On Friday, the Cobras will aim for revenge, as well as a ticket to the Class 1A quarterfinals.
The currently sixth-ranked SK football team will host this year’s Dike-New Hartford squad in a marquee Class 1A matchup on Friday night. The winner will be one win away from the UNI-Dome.
D-NH defeated SK 38-14 in the 2021 playoffs. That is the only game between the two teams in recent memory.
Sigourney-Keota comes into the game after a 52-7 blasting of West Central Valley. D-NH had a similar night last week, taking out Manson-Northwest Webster 51-6.
The Cobras have continued their tradition of pounding teams with their ground game all year long. Sigourney-Keota has only passed the ball 34 times all year, doing the vast majority of the work on their 361 carries.
Senior Kale Clarahan has dashed for 940 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. Isaac Bruns is up to 534 yards and eight scores, and Sawyer Stout has ran for 462 yards and eight touchdowns.
Stout has completed 14 passes this year. He has thrown for 513 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 36.6 yards per completion.
Half the Cobras’ 16 total completions have found the hands of Cole Kindred. Kindred has 411 receiving yards on just eight catches, and five of those have went for touchdowns.
Jake Moore continues to lead the Cobra defense with 40.5 tackles. SK has 13 interceptions on the year, four of which were snagged by Kindred, and the team has collected seven fumble recoveries.
Dike-New Hartford brings a balanced offense into Sigourney, and quarterback Colin Meester has had quite the year, throwing for 880 yards. Meester has only thrown six touchdowns this year, and he’s been picked off four times.
Running back Noah Borcherding has taken 1432 carries for 772 yards and nine touchdowns. Micah Watson has rushed for 400 yards and six scores.
Only two players have double-digit catches for the Wolverines’ offense. Devon Lotts has caught 25 passes for 412 yards and three scores, and Carson Costello has 15 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
The D-NH defense is led by junior Jack Severson, who has 48.5 tackles this season. Seniors Zachry Adelmund and Jayce Jensen have 46 tackles and 44 tackles respectively.
The Wolverines have 21 takeaways on the year. Jensen has four interceptions on the season, and Costello has three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Friday night’s game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner will face either No. 1 Grundy Center or Pella Christian in the quarterfinals.
