MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant senior Reece Coffman will be a collegiate golfer next fall.
Coffman signed his letter of intent last week to attend and play golf at Southeastern Community College next school year. Coffman signed his letter in the Mt. Pleasant Community High School media center.
“SCC was my first choice,” Coffman said. “I wanted to get community college out of the way, because I want to get used to the college feel. It's closer to home, so I can get my general education stuff out of the way before I move on to a bigger college.”
Coffman is one of Mt. Pleasant’s top returners coming into the spring. He finished last season with an 18 hole average of 94.17, and a 9 hole average of 46.17.
“College athletics has always been on my mind,” Coffman said. “Once I started playing golf at a young age and that I could play good golf in high school, I was like, 'I could have a chance at college, and I could do really well.'”
Coffman credits Panther head coach Rob Zeglen, who has been coaching him after since his youth, for helping him sharpen his skills enough to become a collegiate golfer.
“Rob has been a great coach,” Coffman said. “He was there for young guns, and it's nice having someone you've known for a while to help coach. He always helps you with what you need.”
Coffman will join an SCC roster that features multiple former Iowa preps, including Mt. Pleasant graduate Sami Wibben on the girls’ side.
The Panther boys will begin the 2024 season on April 1 when the Panthers travel to Fairfield Golf and Country club for the first Southeast Conference regular season meet.
