COLUMBUS JUNCTION — Columbus’ Lily Coil had one heck of a performance on Tuesday against Pekin.
The sophomore not only helped the Wildcats to a 13-0 victory over the Panthers, but notched career strikeout 200 in her early career.
“I just go into a game thinking that I need to play my best and try to keep my head up,” Coil said. “I always go in ready to go and stay focused. I don’t like to mess around because it could cause problems.”
Coil threw a complete three innings in the game and nearly threw a perfect game, giving up just one hit in the final inning and one walk. She ended with three strikeouts.
“She brings a lot to the table,” Columbus head coach Katie Coil said. “She can bunt, hit and run if she’s not tripping over her feet (Coil fell while rounding third during the game) and she throws pretty hard with a lot of pitches. She’s been huge for the program and as a parent and coach I couldn’t be more proud.”
Columbus coupled an efficient night at the plate with some defense all around.
The Wildcats had the bats going early and often as they scored a whopping 10 runs in the first inning.
Three more in the second, while shutting out Pekin in the third ended the game in three frames of action.
“The win gives out girls a lot of confidence to stay motivated and keep going,” Coil said. “We started off in a bit of a slump, but as we progress the kids just click. You gotta love these girls.”
Sera Vela went 3-for-3 in the game for Columbus. Vela had two RBIs.
Coil finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs as well including an inside the park home run.
Lizzie Gerot and Victoria Howell ended with a pair of RBIs as well.
Pekin showed poise in the game by never letting up, but struggled to limit the Wildcats in the field.
“We gotta minimize the errors,” Pekin head coach Ashlyn Carrasco said. “The girls are doing tremendous at the plate. We have girls that are starting to pick up on that leadership. It’s not our hitting I’m worrying about it’s minimizing those fielding errors.”
Columbus gets back to .500 with the win at 4-4. Pekin still is searching for its first victory at 0-9.
