Monday night was a tough one for the Wildcats of Columbus as they were defeated on both the boys and girls side by the Hawks of Central Lee.
On the girls’ side, Columbus was bested 68-32, while on the boys’ side, they were defeated 68-46.
The girls kicked things off in the nightly doubleheader.
Columbus struggled to get things going early and Central Lee took advantage.
Central Lee shot out to 23-8 lead after just one quarter of action.
The scoring troubles continued throughout the game for the Wildcats as they were held to single digits in three quarters including the first.
The Wildcats best scoring quarter of the night came in the second, but the Hawks still came out on top in the period 18-13.
At the half, Columbus trailed by 20, 41-21.
Scoring woes reached their height in the third as Columbus put just two points on the board to the Hawks 15, putting them down 56-23 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter of the night, the Wildcats were outscored 12-9, sealing the Hawks victory.
Sara Vela led the Wildcats with 10 points in the loss. Ariana Vergara tallied eight points. Frannie Sosa added five and Aracely Garza had four. Victoria Howell had two and Miriam Ruvacalba two.
With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 4-5 on the season.
On the boys’ side, it was a battle for three quarters.
The Wildcats and Hawks were nearly dead even through the first half.
After one quarter, the two teams were linked up at 12 all and at the half, Central Lee held onto a slim one point advantage 24-23.
In the third it was more of the same, as the Hawks outscored the Wildcats by just two, 16-14, to take a 40-37 lead into the final period of the night.
For Columbus, the fourth was the least efficient quarter of the night on both ends of the court, while for the Hawks it was their best.
Central Lee outmatched their first half total in the fourth quarter alone, topping Columbus 28-9 to pull out a commanding win.
For both Wildcat squads, the matchup was the last until after Christmas break.
