PACKWOOD — Pekin held control through the first three innings of its Southeast Iowa Super Conference North matchup against Columbus on Tuesday night, but the Wildcats took over in the middle frames and rolled to a 15-6 victory.
The early innings were back-and-forth. Columbus opened the game with two runs in the first, but Pekin responded with three of its own to take a 3-2 lead.
After a scoreless second, both teams traded runs again. Columbus reclaimed the lead with two more, only for Pekin to answer with another three-run inning to go up 6-4.
From there, it was all Columbus. The Wildcats shut out the Panthers the rest of the way and exploded offensively, scoring 11 unanswered runs between the fourth and seventh innings. That stretch included a five-run fifth inning that put the game out of reach.
Ellie Sanders led the way for Columbus, going a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBIs. Kennedy Woepking had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, including a home run. Daniela Diaz, Lily Coil, Jessica Del Rio, and Iris Garza each collected two hits, with Diaz, Coil, and Del Rio driving in a run apiece. Lizbet Herrera and Aracely Garza also chipped in with an RBI each.
Pekin’s offense was led by Myah Bainbridge, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Addison Smith had a hit and drove in two, while Anna Hadley and Kendra Schultz each had a hit and an RBI. Carlie Gambell, Ezra Parsons, and Kenadie Long also added hits for the Panthers.
The win moves Columbus to 12-11 overall and 7-3 in SEISC North play. Pekin falls to 7-18 and 3-11 in the conference.
