COLUMBUS JUNCTION - Although the Columbus High School softball game with Highland was not played Tuesday, there were pre-game ceremonies that honored the players, specifically Wildcat seniors Quinn Scarff and Aubrey Duncan.
Duncan is Columbus' starting shortstop and occasional catcher. Scarff primarily plays at second base.
Scarff is second on the team with a .375 batting average. Duncan had a .333 on base percentage.
Columbus coach Katie Coil has coached Duncan all five years of her high school career and also in junior high.
'She is a very spunky girl,” Coil said. 'She is extremely athletic. She is aggressive. She is one of those kids that wears her heart on her sleeve. She will give you everything she has got. She will just keep going until she is physically broken. We are really going to miss her positivity. Her hustle and her leadership are extremely important.”
Duncan got a late start to the softball season because she was still in the golf season, competing at the state tournament.
'She is really good at golf,” Coil said. 'We struggled a little bit without her but there was nothing we could do about that except be happy for her. That is her passion and that is what she is going to do when she goes to college.”
She is going to Des Moines Area Community College to continue golfing.
Scarff has been out for softball for three years.
'She is a happy-go-lucky girl and a really amazing kid,” Coil said. 'She brings so much to the table. She was so underutilized until this year. I'm glad we're getting to see all of her talents finally. I don't know what else to say about her because she is an enigma. Everybody just absorbs around her. She is that kid that everybody loves to be around. She just makes everybody feel great about themselves.”
