DONNELLSON — The 2022 Columbus softball season came to an end on Wednesday night, as the Wildcats dropped a Class 3A Region 8 quarterfinal game at Central Lee 14-4.
Columbus scored all four of their runs before the end of the second inning. The Wildcats took advantage of some shaky Central Lee defense, but the Hawks got theirs as well and Columbus trailed 6-4 early.
The Hawks, however, would score the next 10 runs of the ballgame to knock out the Wildcats end move on to the semifinals.
It was a rough night for the Columbus defense. Only three of the 14 Central Lee runs were earned. Kennedy Woepking took the loss, giving up seven runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings. Lily Coil and Libby White also saw the circle.
Despite the loss, Coil was excellent again with the bat. She finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Woepking went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Sera Vela was 2-for-4 with an RBI adn two stolen bases.
Columbus finished the season 12-13. That was the most wins for the Wildcat softball team since the 2014 season.
