WEST BURLINGTON — Saturday was not Columbus girls’ basketball’s night.
The Wildcats (17-4) ran into a Mediapolis (20-1) team that was firing on all cylinders as they suffered a 66-12 defeat in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference finals inside Southeast Community College’s Loren Walker Arena.
Mediapolis, who came into the SEISC North and South showdown with just one loss on the season, was dominant from the jump.
Columbus struggled mightily facing the Bulldogs full court pressure and when the Wildcats were able to get into their offensive sets, they couldn’t find the bottom of the net.
The Wildcats were held without a point through the first period, while the Bulldogs poured in a whopping 27 points, their most of the night.
Mediapolis had the hot hand from beyond the arc, drilling five triples through the first eight minutes.
The scoring drought continued for Columbus into the second as they went over 13 minutes in all without scoring.
Up to that point, the Bulldogs built a 35-0 lead.
Lily Coil broke the spell for the Wildcats, but they finished with just one more field goal from Frannie Sosa the rest of the half.
Heading into the second half, Mediapolis led 42-4.
The Bulldogs only continued to add to their lead in the second half. An 11-0 run pushed the Bulldogs lead to 53-4 before the Wildcats scored all three of their third quarter points.
Heading into the fourth, Mediapolis led 59-7. In the final frame, the Bulldogs edged the Wildcats 7-5 to end it.
Lily Coil led Columbus with five points in the loss. Frannie Sosa added four and Ariana Vergara two.
Columbus finished the game with a field goal percentage of 12.2% in the game and went 0-for-18 from the three point line.
Meanwhile, Mediapolis shot 52.3% and 56.2% from deep.
