NEW LONDON — Columbus and New London girls basketball went head-to-head on Thursday night in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and South clash.
When all was said and done in the conference matchup the North side walked away victorious as Columbus finished on top 64-36.
In the opening frame it was anyone’s game as the Tigers and Wildcats traded buckets and leads. But after going up 15-13 at the end of the opening eight minutes, Columbus would never trail again.
Through the following two quarters the Wildcats only widened their lead with some easy shots in transition, mostly created by relentless full court pressure.
The press was something that New London just couldn’t overcome as Columbus rattled off a game-high 23 points in the second quarter, while holding the Tigers to just eight.
By the start of the third period, Columbus’ advantage was 38-21.
That narrative stay consistent through the third as well. Columbus won the third quarter 17-6 on its way to a 55-27 lead heading into the final frame.
In the closing period, the Wildcats and Tigers were deadlocked each scoring nine a piece as Columbus was able to notch its ninth win of the year.
With the victory Columbus moves to 9-1 on the season, while New London drops to 1-8.
