COLUMBUS — Columbus senior Ariana Vergara made her college choice known on Monday, signing on to play women’s basketball at Mount Mercy University.
Vergara is coming off a big senior year for Columbus. She led the Wildcats with 10 points per game, 3.5 assists per game and 4.6 steals per game. She also finished third on the team with five rebounds per contest.
Vergara will join a Mount Mercy team that went 17-12 last season, along with a 14-10 mark in the Heart of America Conference.
Mount Mercy advanced to the semifinals of the Heart of America conference before falling to end its season.
Columbus finished off a banner year in Vergara’s senior season. The Wildcats went 18-5 this season and finished 14-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division to bring home a conference title.
Vergara, along with the rest of the senior class at Columbus, helped the team rise from a three-win team in 2021-22 to an 18-win team this winter.
Vergara is currently playing on the Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union soccer team.
