Columbus, WACO run at Winfield

The Columbus girls cross-country team finished fifth and the boys were sixth at the Winfield Invitational Thursday. WACO's boys placed eighth.

The Wildcat boys were led by freshman Isaac Acosta, who finished seventh in the field of 67 runners with an outstanding time of 18 minutes, 24 seconds.

'Isaac definitely ran his best race,” Columbus coach Steve Riley said. 'But the entire boys team ran well. We finished sixth, but we were just 13 points from getting third.”

The Wildcat girls were led by Anna Hamilton, who just missed a medal with a 16th place in a personal-best time of 23:43.

Of the 20 Columbus runners, 17 ran a season-best, if not a career-best, time.

'The course was lengthened a little from last year, and many kids ran better times than they ran last year on a short course,” Riley said. 'We just had outstanding performances.”

Grace Conwell was WACO's highest finisher at No. 21, but WACO girls did not have a team score. Jonah Egli was 22nd for the boys.
