Columbus/WMU earns SEISC title
Wildcats nip Notre Dame by 1 point

BURLINGTON — In one of the closest conference championships you’ll ever see in high school athletics, the Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys wrestling team pulled out a thrilling Southeast Iowa Super Conference championship on Saturday.
The Wildcats scored 247 at the SEISC tournament, beating hosting Notre Dame by just one point to reign supreme.
The Wildcats had two conference individual champions. Kason Doppler took first place at 175 pounds, winning the championship on a 3-0 decision, and Russel Coil turned three pins into a championship at 285 pounds.
The Wildcats had six second place finishers. Dakota Andy (106), Ty Scorpil (126), Bowen Thomson (132), Trevor Phillips (150) Cole Storm (157) and Riley Kaalberg (190) all took silver.
Highland finished fourth place overall, scoring 122.5 points. 120-pounder Luke Guseman was a conference champion, taking the bracket on a 14-5 major decision against New London’s Kane Forseen.
WACO took fifth place on the day, anchored by a 190-pound championship by Louden Huisenga. Huisenga collected two pins, including one over Kaalberg in the final.
WACO’s Gage Samo took second place at 113 pounds to give the Warriors two Top-2 finishers.
Along with Forseen, New London scooped a second-place finish at 165 pounds thanks to Michael Raines’ runner-up finish. The Tigers finished seventh overall.
Van Buren County’s best finish went to Tyler Stoltz, who took fourth at 144 pounds. Pekin’s Reed Lauderman scored all of the Panthers’ points thanks to a third-place finish at 106.
