Columbus/WMU wins 2, Fairfield 1 at Trojan quad

FAIRFIELD — The four wrestling teams at Fairfield High School were evenly matched, at least enough to make every dual a tight one in an area quadrangular.

The quad, which was originally supposed to be just Fairfield, Oskaloosa and Albia, also featured Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, which joined the fray late last week. Columbus/WMU had a nice night at the meet, going 2-1.

“This is probably the best we’ve wrestled all year,” said Columbus/WMU coach Andy Milder. “I told the kids, all I want is effort and fight, and the kids stepped up.”

The Wildcats scored a 43-27 win over Oskaloosa at the beginning of the day, and finished with a thrilling 41-38 win over Fairfield. The Wildcats earned the victory by winning four of the last five matches, including a technical fall by Cael Phillips over Julian Pumphrey at 138 pounds.

Fairfield’s lone win came against Oskaloosa. The Trojans took out the Indians 48-40, thanks in part to pins by Cason Miller at 145 pounds, Aiden Lyons at 170 pounds, Dain Burkhart at 182 pounds. Logan Johnson at 220 pounds, Cael McCabe at 106 pounds and Zach Westercamp at 132 pounds.

“We knew it was going to be evenly matched duals with all these teams,” said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. “What it came down to was winning the matchups.”

The Trojans had a hot start against Albia before falling in most of the heavier weight classes. The Blue Demons went 3-0 to win the night.

For Fairfield, it was the last night of action before the first-place Fort Madison Bloodhounds come in for a Southeast Conference dual on Thursday night.

“Fort Madison is the number one team in the conference right now,” said Miller. “They’re stacked. They’re the favorite by far. We’re going to try to give them a fight.”
