BURLINGTON — Washington put up a nice run late against the Southeast Conference leaders in Thursday’s doubleheader at Burlington, but it wasn’t enough to hand the Grayhounds their first loss in league play.
A nine-run first inning helped Burlington knock off the Demons 14-8, keeping the Grayhounds unscathed in the SEC.
Burlington held a 9-0 lead after one inning, and a 14-1 advantage after three, but Washington did buckle down in the second half the game.
The Demons put up one run in the top of the fourth, scored five in the fifth and plated one in the seventh, but ran out of innings in a six-run loss.
Nate Edmonds went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Demons. Ethan Peebler knocked in two runs. Julian Parsons, Easton Rugg and Isaac Medrano all knocked in one.
Blayze Richardson, who came in to relieve Peebler, pitched the majority of the game for Washington. He threw 3.2 shutout innings, giving up just three hits and three walks.
The loss dropped Washington to 4-10 overall, and 4-10 in conference play.
