Comets come up short in overtime loss

ELDON ? Little by little, the Cardinal girls? basketball team continues to come closer to nabbing its first victory of the winter season.

The Comets, who lost 59-31 to Van Buren in the season opener before falling 50-47 to Albia Nov. 21, lost an overtime battle to the Bears 67-60 Tuesday evening.

?The girls played hard and came up short,? said Miller. ?We continue to improve every game and that will pay off later in the season.?

Cardinal came out strong on its way to posting a 12-10 lead after the first period and 30-27 advantage at the midway point.

Danville came back to tie it up 38-all at the end of the third quarter, and the two teams continued to play even in the final period ? scoring 16 points each ? to force overtime at 54-all. The Bears saved the best for last, however, outscoring Cardinal 13-6 in the extra frame.

Laci Moore scored a season-high 19 points to go along with two blocks, five steals and four assists. Lindsay Moore had 18 points, four steals and four assists; and Brooke Courtney added 10 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line. Sarah Greiner and Jordan Smith had seven rebounds apiece.

The Comets (0-3, 0-2 SEISC south) host Holy Trinity Friday.
