ELDON - The Cardinal football didn't miss a beat after a two-week layoff due to a COVID-19 postponement last week against Pekin. The Comets picked up right where they left off 14 days prior with a dominant 43-8 win against Louisa-Muscatine on Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cardinal put up four touchdowns in the second. Blaine Bryant opened the scoring with a 29-yard pass to Ian Liles. Griffin Greiner scored once on a 13-yard run and once on a 6-yard pass from Bryant, and Landon Becker had the biggest play of the night with an 80-yard touchdown reception. At the half, Cardinal led 28-0.
Bryant found Greiner on a 55-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to set up the 35-point running clock, which would last for the rest of the contest. The Comets led 36-0 after Greiner's third touchdown of the night, and Liles made it 43-0 with a 3-yard run later in the period.
Louisa-Muscatine finally broke through the Cardinal defense in the fourth quarter.
Bryant had another successful start behind center, going 10-for-13 for 273 yards and four touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing yards, with 67.
Becker caught two balls for 90 yards and a score. Greiner had 101 total yards on the night and three touchdowns, and Liles finished the game with 96 total yards and two scores.
The Comets are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. They will travel to Mediapolis (2-2, 1-0) this week.
