CENTERVILLE — Cardinal gave it a good effort in Centerville on Monday night, as the Comets tried to upset the Big Reds in Class 1A District 6 opener. The Offense, however, just wasn’t able to get going.
Just a few days after sweeping Cardinal in the final SCC doubleheader of the year, Centerville knocked off Cardinal 3-1 in the first postseason game of the year.
Centerville scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early advantage, but Cardinal didn’t give up. The Comets cut that lead in half with a run in the top of the third, when Craig Miller knocked in Quinn Snyder for what would be the Comets’ only run of the ballgame.
Centerville put one more run up in the bottom of the sixth. Cardinal couldn’t get anything in the top of the seventh and that ended baseball season in Eldon.
Snyder started the game on the mound and had a nice outing despite the loss. The Comet junior went six innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks, while striking out four batters.
The Comets could only muster two hits off Centerville starter Brody Tuttle. Miller went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Snyder went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Cardinal finished the season 7-20. The Comets went 5-16 in their first season in the South Central Conference.
Centerville (15-13) moved on to play Pella Christian (15-16) in the quarterfinals.
