ELDON — The Cardinal softball team will get its shot at the top team in Class 2A after a regional semifinal win over West Branch on Wednesday night.
Cardinal knocked off West Branch 4-1 in a Class 2A Region 7 quarterfinal bout. On the other side, Regina beat Pekin 12-0.
West Branch got on the board first on a solo home run off Cardinal ace Nicoa McClure, but the Bears didn’t get much going after that. instead, McClure locked in and dominated for the next six innings.
Cardinal took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, added one run in the second and tacked one on in the sixth.
McClure went all 12 innings, giving up just one earned run on seven hits and one walk. She struck out 12 West Branch batters in the win.
Cynthia Albert went 2-for-3 to lead Cardinal at the plate. Ava Ferrell was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Emma Becker had a double and an RBI. Kinsey Hissem was 1-for-3 with a double, and both McClure and Ashlynn Patrick knocked in runs.
Cardinal will take on a Regina team that knocked off Pekin in a shortened game on Wednesday night. The Regals enter 25-8, while the Comets come in 14-15.
The Comets have come up one run shy of the state tournament in each of the last two years, and in 2021, it was a game at Regina that ended the Comets’ season. On Friday night, Cardinal will look to enact revenge on the Regals, who came back to beat Cardinal 5-4 in an 11-inning regional final in 2021.
