Comets nearly clip Falcons wings

ELDON - The Cardinal boys basketball team nearly grounded the Falcons in their Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division battle on Tuesday ngiht. West Burlington avoided the upset, 59-56.
It was the Comets fourth-straight game decided by 10 points or less.
Elias Elamarri and Kaysean Moore led a balanced Comet attack in the loss, putting up 11 points each. Rashsha Pope added 10.
Mid-Prairie drowns Beavers
WILTON - The Golden Hawks outscored the home team in each quarter by four, three and seven, successive building their lead to 48-34 starting the fourth period to secure the River Valley Conference win, 61-50.
Mid-Prairie had 16 assists on 21 made field goals, led by Alex Bean with five, Will Cavanagh with four, Jackson Pennington with three and Carter Harmsen two.
Harmsen scored 19 points and Ethan Kos posted 16. Aidan Rath scored nine points and Bean eight. Rath cleared the board nine times and Harmsen had seven rebounds, Kos five and Pennington four.
Keota tames Savages
SIGOURNEY - The Eagles blasted past Sigourney with a 15-4 first quarter and a 28-12 halftime lead on the way to a 57-36 South Iowa Cedar League win.
Luke Hammen drilled 4-of-6 3-pointers, producing 17 total points. Eagles teammate Sam Sieren went 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from deep for his 13 points. Bryce Greiner added eight points while Hammen had eight rebounds. Colten Clarahan and Brady Duwa each corralled six rebounds. Duwa generated points with his five assists while Carson Sprouse and Greiner had four apiece.
Tigers stay atop the South
NEW LONDON - New London rolled over Central Lee 78-61 to stay on top of the South Division and avenge a four-point loss to the Hawks earlier this season.
New London led 24-12 after one quarter, 42-33 at halftime and 57-49 after three quarters. Blaise Porter went off for 36 points and seven assists. Kade Benjamin had 23 points, including a thunderous alley-oop dunk in the third quarter, and led the team with 15 rebounds. Kooper Schulte tallied seven points off the bench.
WACO falters
WAYLAND - A sluggish start and turnovers slowed down WACO against South foe Danville on Senior Night, losing 54-40.
Senior Will Edeker had three 3-pointers and freshman Reece Oswald paced WACO as he finished with 10. Simeon Reichenbach had eight points, six rebounds and a block.
Ty Carr and Cam Edle combined for 29 Danville points.
Wolves win
LETTS - Winfield-Mt. Union snapped a modest two-game losing streak with a 45-39 win over Louisa-Muscatine. The Wolves won 45-39 to move back up to .500 (8-8).
WMU's defense anchored the team early. The Wolves led 8-7 after the first quarter and 19-14 at halftime.
The Wolves put up 17 points in the third quarter to take a 36-27 advantage into the final quarter. L-M won the fourth quarter 12-9.
Watson hits 20 for Columbus
COLUMBUS JUNCTION - The North Division battle saw the Lions get their first win, 56-43. Lone Tree built an 11-point halftime lead to send the Wildcats to 1-15.
Not only did Owen Watson pour in 20 points, he also prevented a number of Lions points by blocking five shots. Mason Hodges returned to action and added six points. Timmy Hills followed with five. Columbus will play Winfield-Mount Union today and travels Friday for a rematch with Lone Tree.
