ELDON -It was a happy homecoming for the Cardinal football team, which roasted North Mahaska 49-12 for their fourth-straight win to start the season.
The Comets wasted no time jumping all over the Warhawks. After Ben Clark picked off a pass on the first North Mahaska possession, Gabe Reyes ranfor an eight-yard touchdown and Griffin Greiner caught the two-point conversion.
Max Bettencourt scored the next Cardinal touchdown, hauling in a six-yard pass from Maddux Jones. Then, after a North Mahaska fumble, Jones ran one in on his own. In the blink of an eye, it was already 21-0.
The next two Comet touchdowns were by the defense. Blaine Bryant had a wild pick-six and Cardinal fell on a loose ball off a botched punt. From that point on, it was cruise control for the Comets, who went undefeated in nondistrict play for the second-straight year.
Cardinal will open up district play at Pekin this week in a game between two Union area coverage teams.
