FAIRFIELD — It was a wacky one in Fairfield on Tuesday night, as the Trojans and Golden Hawks both blew late leads in a non-conference clash between Union area teams.
The Trojans battled all the way back from four runs down to take a late advantage, but Mid-Prairie batted around in the seventh, scoring eight runs to rush past the Trojans in the dark of the night.
The Golden Hawks got off to a strong start, scoring one run in the first inning and three in the third. Mid-Prairie took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, when Fairfield began to claw back.
The Trojans would fill the bases for the next three frames, scoring two in the fourth to cut the lead in half, one in the fifth to cut it to 4-3, and three in the sixth.
Fairfield took its first advantage of the day when a two-out dribbler by Sam Weaton turned into an infield single, and a wild throw scored two Trojans on the error. Fairfield, which had trailed all night, enjoyed a 6-4 lead going into the final frame.
“Momentum shifts pretty fast,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet. “A couple plays can make quite the difference. I was proud of our guys to stay mentally checked in and compete like it was 0-0.”
Mid-Prairie loaded the bases and scored two runs to tie the game before recording an out. The Golden Hawks eventually took the lead on a fielder’s choice, which was botched by the Fairfield defense, and Bowen Burmeister knocked in two runs on a single for the knock out punch.
“Coach is always talking about how we need to flush mistakes and live in the present,” said Burmeister. “We made a couple errors in the bottom of the sixth, but then came up with some big hits in the top of the seventh.”
The Golden Hawk senior started the game on the mound, giving up just two earned runs over four innings, but it was his bat that got most of the action. Burmeister went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBIs to lead Mid-Prairie.
Brady Weber had two hits and an RBI in the win for Mid-Prairie. Brock Harland went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Joe Hall, Lndry Gingerich, Blake Swart and Brooks Weber all knocked in runs.
Weaton went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Fairfield in the loss. Cason Miller, Dain Burkhart and Luke Konczal all knocked in runs, and the trio of Tallon Bates, Caden Allison and Aiden Westercamp had three hits each.
“We grabbed a little momentum back on our time, and then we lost it again,” said Fairfield head coach Josh Allison. “We were a little limited with the pitchers we could use tonight, but our guys we had in competed for us.”
Mid-Prairie moved to 14-7 with the win. Fairfield fell to 14-8.
